New to Switzerland - Advice

  • @RebelFazer Wohn 18 Johr in nem kleine Dorf im Jura und du wirsch Französisch lerne

Yeahh perfect :face_with_rolling_eyes: . From your own expereience, when you tried to start speaking French you proabably shit in your pants and could barely walk out of fear :grinning_squinting_face: Better pass that experience except you now tell me there was also somthing with titties.

PS: Ich bin ein DUMMSCHWÄTZER !!!

  • HI Ben. I just signed up myself. I'm from South Africa originally but I've been here for 30 years now, so I speaka da lingo, so to speak. Hope you find your feet. For a great youtube expat riding experience, look up Andy Man Cam in Hamburg, Germany.

As mentioned above, motorradhandel.ch is probably the biggest place for bikes, but ricardo.ch is also good and tutti.ch is fantastic for cheap deals.

Alos, as mentioned above, louis.eu and http://www.polo-motorrad.ch are good. http://www.motardinn.com is also not bad, but don't forget about customs duty on imports. Otherwise, do an online tour of dealers and ask about gear, etc.

You'll prolly find routes and clubs on your own, as bikers, like in most places, tend to be friendly and chatty. Don't forget the obligatory left handed bikers greeting on the roads :grinning_squinting_face: Youtube will also help you find lots of the ore famous places, but from where you are there are amazing routes in Appenzell right next door.

Cops and officials tend to be faffy and strict here. Mods need to be "homologated", i.e. certified in Switzerland, which can be an enormous pain, because if the part hasn't been certified by some dealer, you'll have to get it done yourself which is mostly not worth it as it's hugely expensive. http://www.cycle-tech.ch/de/q1/Kapitel_Motorrad/Chapter.aspx is a good place to see if the parts have been certified here.

Insurance: avoid AXA as they're pretty pricey.

Hoooowzit! Lekker, another boertjie in the forum! Welcome!

I was born in Germany but migrated to Joburg when I was 5 and grew up there. Married a van der Schyff (yes, granddaughter of the infamous Springbok, Jack Henry van der Schyff) and we have been living in Switerland for 10 years.

    Lekker bly boet!

You can`t scare me, I was raised in and survived South Africa

  • Pretty much the opposite here. Born in Joburg and came to Switzerland at age of 3 or 4. No memories from there though, just the green booklet as souvenir  .

Hmmm...I guess we could work out a "back to the roots" program for you :grinning_squinting_face:

  • Hey Spike numba wan! Did you do the Deutsche Schule thing in joeys? There seem to be a fair number of people from SA here in Eurostan. There's a boertjie living in Poland (la femme fatale strikes again) doing youtube videos under the handle of 0 to 100 adventures. I think he's also the only person on earth who rides a honda 1200 crosstourer. :grinning_squinting_face:

    Numba Wan...haha, VOETSEK MAN! :grinning_squinting_face:
Well when we arrived in Transvaal in 1985 I was thrown into a goverment school not knowing more than a couple of words in English in Edenvale (Eastleigh Primary School) where I spent grade 1 through 6 - did not take 2 weeks and I was in my first fight. The result was a complimentary visit to the headmasters office and got smacked on the knuckles with a wooden spoon hehe.
Then two years Fourways High School (badass oaks there, lotsa kak) and then two years DSJ but after having grown up in a strict, tough public school system, DSJ was not for me (rich kids, softies and so on), so I ended up at Germiston Technical College.

Yeah, there is a ton of SA people here, especially so in the canton of Zug - my wife and I actually do this on the side as a pick-up point: meatpoint.ch
Biltong, boerewors, droewors and so on.

  • Once again, thank's all for the information!

*** Update for anyone interested! ***

1 month later and I've brought a bike! Insurance is sorted, just need to find some new leathers this week during a trip to England!

Here she is in all her glory, I will be collecting her on the 24th! Yes, the exhaust has the correct paperwork although the temptation to leave the baffle out is ... X/:whistling:
